Tom Lucas is busy modeling in the Gallery!

Tom has been busy modeling for Ken Newman's female figurative sculpture at Silver Sage Gallery in Dubois WY. Ken and Debbie have been in the gallery off an on over the past two weeks. Ken is working on this clay...surprised it doesn't have a cowboy hat on it yet. He is also working on a wood sculpture, the carpet in the gallery will never be the same.

After the gallery closes we all head out to Horse Creek Campground to enjoy a glass of wine (Deb and Tammy) a fist of whiskey for Ken and Tom under the stars in Wyoming.. Good friends, good conversations, interesting stories over the campfire. Oh yeah, Tom enjoyed his first experience with Jiffy Pop over the fire...and tonight he will get to experience S'mores!

Stop by the gallery on your way to Jackson... The gallery is beautiful. Tom Lucas and Gary Keimig are busy painting daily... the cowboy way!

Ken Newman Sculpting in Gallery

National Sculpture Society Member Ken Newman, joins Gary Keimig and Tom Lucas at Silver Sage Gallery in Dubois, WY the next two weeks. Friendship that began years ago brings Ken back to Dubois for a meet and greet of old friends and to sculpt at the gallery. Ken is heading in from a weekend at Columbine Gallery in Loveland, Co and will be in Dubois the next two Monday August 16 and 23 from 5-9pm and the next to Tuesdays and Wednesday from 11pm til 6pm. Join us in welcoming Ken Newman to the gallery. He will be working on a wood sculpture and a clay figurative work for bronze.

Ken's sculptures continue to receive national recognition and awards for both his wildlife and figurative sculptures. his newest bronze sculptures of curlews were juried into the prestigious 35th Birds in Art at the Woodson Art Museum in Wausau WI and the 50Th Society Of Animal Artist's Art and the Animal Exhibition at the San Diego Natural Museum in California.

Our gallery dog, Tinker, the Long Haired Chihuaua is a crowd pleaser and certainly is not spoiled as shown by these two young visitors. It is hard for parents to drag the kids off with Tinker demanding so much attention. Belly rubs are a favorite.

We had a special event this 4th of July with Dustin Stephenson in the gallery throwing his award winning pots. Many had the chance to watch Dustin do his magic. Dustin was actually in the Gallery from June 29 thru the 4th.

The 4th was a gallery favorite time and we were all very busy selling and wrapping art work for purchasers and shipping.

June 19th was the date for the Gallery SUMMER KICK OFF Show where we welcome back all the snowbirds and have an open house serving great food and snacks for all in attendance. This has become quite an event and this year was no exception with many attending and sales were brisk.
It is also a time to celebrate Gary Keimig, Vicki Keimig and Chris Phelps, birthdays. Vicki and Chris have the same birth dates. We share the cake with all who come in and it is gone quickly.

Gary Keimig received great news this spring with his acceptance in the prestigious Masters In Miniature show at the C M Russell Museum this coming September. SONORAN SUNSET is the Oil Painting chosen.

Gary has once again been invited to participate in the Fall Art Festival Quick-draw in the town square in Jackson, Wyoming also this next September. this is an annual event featuring some of the top quick-draw artists in the country. Gary in an annual invitee.

Our summer season is off and running with lots of visitors and sales have been quite good.
Gallery pardnerTom Lucas began coaching Tory Taylor last year on the construction of a Bighorn Sheep Bow. Tory is progressing quite well with it and was in the gallery looking for more direction and showing it off. He is going to finish with quite a beautiful piece of an early day indian treasure.

Dan Andrews from Denver, Colorado is a Silversage Gallery artist and specializes in doing Acrylic paintings. A favorite in the gallery and at events such as this quick-draw is his Acrylic paintings on Turkey feathers. Dan has won the purchase Award several times at the Petroleum Club Show in Casper. He is a favorite wherever he is painting and showing.
Dan had left Denver is a snow storm and was going to return last night. I wonder how far he got as SE Wyoming was completely shut down with snow last night and continued to be so today. April, 24th.

Friday night, April, 23d was the annual Casper Petroleum Club Show in Casper, Wyoming which includes a quick-draw of one hour that Tom Lucas, shown here painting away, Gary, Keimig and gallery artist, Dan Andrews were involved in this event. We are given one hour to come up with a painting that is then offered to the participating public through an auction. The artist received 50% of the proceeds.

This is the new sculpture shelf we have put in built from a huge Pine log slab that Tom sanded down and verithaned and supported both at the wall and log slab feet. Tom also added the slanted shelf at the bottom for more rope basket displays. Barbara Lorentzen's reed with antler baskets tie off the ends for a beautifully displayed area. That is Tinker, the gallery long haired Chihuahua resident making his presence known.

and is crafted by various indian artists from the southwest and is handled by Nancy Kiernan from Scottsdale, Arizona.

During the weeks of getting things in shape we have had numerous visitors dropping by to see what new we have come up with. We have the cofffee pot on and it is a great break sitting by the wood stove enjoying a cup and visiting with some of those visitors and artist such as Stephen Lunsford, one of our really great photographers.

Also in the back room Tom has added an enclosure on the Artifact-Pottery-Arizona Jewelry case. It has been open at the bottom and was useless except for collecting dust. This is a great place now for displaying our rope baskets by Deena Carrico.

Above in the case is the Musem quality indian artifact work that Tom Lucas is so adept at. He even has some of the PBS tapes for sale from the films that were produced of him doing that work.

For the past two weeks we have been busy rehanging the gallery and inventoring all our art employing a new pricing system which looks very professional. It has been time consuming but well worth it. We have moved artists and art around giving the gallery a fresh new look. Several new construction projects have also added to the looks of the gallery. This is the back room with our wood stove heated up as it remains quite chilly with snow falling periodically.

Ken Newman is a nationally acclaimed wood and bronze sculptor living in Idaho. Ken became familiar with the Dubois area in 2001 and has traveled to Horse Creek Camp Ground for many years. Over the years, a relationship with gallery owners Gary Keimig and Tom Lucas has evolved and Ken is excited to be represented by Siver Sage Gallery. A winner of the Best of Show at the 2001 Wind River National Art Exhibition with a wood sculpture, Emerging Quail, Ken and debbie hope to return to the beautiful mountains and streams of Wyoming this summer.

As we become distanced from the natural world, Ken Newman's scultures capture a unique view of nature where discovery become a focal point. He is drawn to question and interpret the relationships of man and nature and how each influences and the other.

Ken explains "I create art to impact the viewer's thoughts and perceptions of nature, not for a sculpture's simplicity or beauty. When sculpting from a single piece of wood; my goal is to create a respect for nature and to convey and share my appreciation and interpretation of wildlife. Just a note to let everyone know that Gary had a nasty fall a couple of weeks ago while doing some work on his studio and deck at home, and he crushed his heel and party crushed a vertebrate. He ended up in Casper to see the Doctor there then ended back home for the swelling to go down . He Had surgery on Wednesday in Casper and recovering now.

We sure miss him at the gallery.

Tom Lucas was in Casper upon invitation of the Wyoming Game & Fish Commision for the Outdoor Exposition where Outdoor activities are demonstrated for all the school kids in the state of Wyoming. Tom is much sought after because of his expertise in Indian Craft work and is a favorite at this event doing Flint Napping and demonstrating his Bighorn Sheep Bow that he is a master at constructing and using.

Gary did quite well in the show. The weekend ended with an Artists Barbeque at Patti Lufkin's ranch north of town. What a meal and what a host.

Dubois recently was involved with the National Day of the Cowboy and with a panel of judges covered the town in search of the Best presented Cowboy Store and the Best dressed Cowboy. In fun Gary Keimig dressed the part even sitting his saddle at the easle to be a part of the contest. Gary was awarded "BEST DRESSED COWBOY" for 2009 and the Gallery was awarded RUNNER UP for best wetern Store.

Tom Lucas won First place in Oil and also won The Purchase Award on the above piece named Brave Heart.

Guadalupe Barrajas
Guadalupe is a recent sculptor to the Silver Sage Gallery and we are proud to represent his fine western and wildlife work.
Guadalupe is a native of Wyoming ,receiving a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in three-dimensional design from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
After school he stayed in Chicago teaching in the Chicago Public School system where he received many honors including the prestigious Golden Apple Award of Excellence in Teaching.
Retiring of teaching in 1994 Guadalupe returned to Wyoming commiting himself to sculpting full time, his first love in the fine arts field. His first works were of wildlife but he soon branched out into his Native American heritage with bronzes of that Indian heritage.
His talent has afforded him the opportunity to expand into monumental works. OPEN SEASON is one of these that was unveiled at the Governors mansion in Cheyenne, Wyoming in 2008.
Guadalupe has received a number of awards such as "Artist of the Year" in 1997 by the Natrional Bison Association. Winning 1st place Gold in 1999 from the Foundation for North American Wild Sheep, and Best of show twice at the Western Spirit Art Show in Cheyenne, Wyoming.
Guadalupe is quoted as saying, "Unless one has seriously sculpted, it would seem difficult understanding the feeling of literally taking a lump of clay, and breathing life into it. This is my reality as a bronze sculptor. Unlike painting, where I've created illusions of space, sculpture consumes its space as it takes on a life of its own. Every angle of its composition presents a new perspective and an added challenge to my creative energy. Sculpting to me is a truely intimate experience. Capturing that inner spirit and energy of ones subject invloves an intimate connection. This is what seperates mediocrity from the real deal.

D Michael Thomas is one of our bronze artists and is one of the premier bronze artists in America doing western subjects. He is much sought after for his monument work and seems to have these kind of projects going all the time. Most recently was an installation at the University of Wyoming. Another well known piece is of his personal friend, Chris La Doux. I have known Michael since he was a young fellow in Torrington, Wyoming when his father was the Game Warden there. His mother at the time was well on her way to becoming one of the top wildlife artists in the country.
My personal connection now is in the fact that my son-in-law, Clay Ward does all his welding and Patina work in his Finishing Studio.

Barbara Lorentzen from here in Dubois does the most interesting Reed Baskets and are sought after by many of our collectors. They are constructed with various antler attachments and are designed to hang, to be put on table tops or simply as floor settings. This piece utilizes a Whitetail Deer Antler.

Leslie Kirchner reports that she had a great show at the Phippen Museum Western Art Show and Sale in Prescott, Arizona where she participated in the quick-Draw and her horse portrait, a 5"x7" Acrylic painting, DAWNS EARLY LIGHT won first place in Acrylic.

Gallery pardner, Tom put down his paintbrush to concentrate on his museum quality artifact work, here making a breast plate. A very time consuming but beautiful presentation of art work. Several weeks ago Tom's case was pretty well stocked with his handiwork thinking that should take a while to sell. Wow! Has it ever moved. There are now bare spots in the display forcing him to get back to work on it.

It has been almost comical though to watch Tom trying to work away and continually being confronted with gallery visitors about what he is doing and he is so good at explanation and demonstration of his craft.

One gentleman spent some time with Tom wanting a time when Tom could give him some lessons on flint napping. With schools and organization demands filling that schedual it is getting hard to fit anyone in this summer. Dustin Stephenson is our Gallery Potter and is an icredible potter and teacher. I first met Dustin when we showed together at the annual Art Show over the 4th of July in Saratoga, Wyoming many years ago. We have been in a number of other shows since then.
Dustin was born and grew up in Thermopolis, Wyoming and after receiving a teachers degree taught art for many years in Mullen, Nebraska. Two years ago he had the chance to become the art teacher in Tensleep, Wyoming and jumped at the chance where he currently is the art teacher and coach for sporting activities.
Here is Dustin in a familiar role at the National 2-Shot Goose Hunt in Torrington, Wyoming doing the quick draw where he is liable to do 10 pots in the 45 minutes we are allowed to do our art work. Of course he is surrounded by kids who find he and his work such a natural draw.

Living at the head of Wyoming's Dunoir Valley on a working cattle ranch, Deb Robinett is witness to sights few of us can imagine, let alone experience. The glimpses she captures as the shutter closes are instants, precious in their content, to the eyes, to the emotions, to the soul, western glimpses of the lifestyle and surroundings of Deb Robinett. From the delicate play on light glistening on the wings of a butterfly to the raw power of the grizzly bear, Deb's camera records the majestic sometimes comical, snippets of nature. Her subjects range from the wildlife and the breathtaking scenery that surround her to the workings of a western ranch where she lives and works. Captured and reproduced as enlargements and keepsake cards, western glimpses are meant to carry a precious message, a message accenturated by a beautiful moment in time.

Devon Meyers is a very special person and artist. I first met Devon while doing an art show in Scottsdale, Arizona seven years ago while waiting for an Art Store to open. They were late in doing so and Devon was also waiting. We got into a conversation and I invited her to the art show and she reciprocated the invitation with an invite to her home for dinner and I therefor became aquainted with her, her husband and two wonderful children. The show I was doing was ten weeks long and another dinner invite was much appreciated. Devon became enamored with the idea of the wilderness pack trips and pleine Aire painting I was conducting at the time and by next summer she was a participant in that trip which was known as the trip to Hell as it was in August and snowed and cold accompanied the whole trip. She seemed to love it and over the next several years joined in a number of those Pack trips.

Devon has a great love of the outdoors and tries to capture its detail and beauty in her work. She paints in both watercolor and oil. Art has always been her lifes passion but along the way she has earned a degree in engineering and a Masters in Landscape Architecture. She worked in computer graphics, sustainable development and environmental planning. After having two children, she decided to take her art work to the next level and started her own design firm, Devon Meyer Designs. Her work is diverse and includes landscape design, technical illustration, graphic design and portraits. She is a master at Journal Art.

Her home is in the Sonoran Desert and she loves capturing the desert's brilliant beauty. I addition, she has worked and taught in Wyoming the last seven years and is continually inspired by the beauty she experiences there. She has illustrated childrens books and created murals. Her work is in collections internationally. She teaches art to children and adults including classes at the Phoenix Art Museum in watercolor painting and 17th Century art appreciation.

Devon spends as much time outdoors as she can. She did her first half marathon in 2008 and will be in her first Olympic Triathlon in 2009. She loves hiking and rock climbing.

Stephen Lunsford is one of the fine photographers that Dubois is blessed with. We are proud to represent Stephen at Silversage Gallery.
Stephen was born in San Jose, California and developed an early interest in photography nurtured by understanding parents. This interest developed to the point that by the age of 14 he had built a dark room and was seriously educating himself on the science and art of photography.
This interest and his love of the wilderness lead Stephen to his photgraphic and artistic mentor, Ansel Adams. His education was enhanced by attending Laney College in Oakland, California as well as numerous workshops at the San Francisco Art Institute and Ansel Adams workshops in Yosemite National Park.
His work progressed through experimentation with abstract and representational photography which to this day is so prevalent in his work.
After serving extensively in the military where Stephen garnered many medals of service to country he continued working on his photography and in developing his skills in technique finally embracing the digital age where his work now captivates the viewer with the artistic application he is so adept at.
Stephen moved to Dubois, Wyoming in 2004 with his wife who was a Wyoming native and says he has definitely found a home.

In his artistic statement Stephen says
"Whenever I enter the studio to start a new project it becomes a journey of the spirit, a journey back to the vastness of intuition..and imagination..where formless emerges into the form, becoming the language of vision"

Leslie Kirchner is one of the fine artists our gallery represents. She is fast becoming well known for her wildlife portrayals in the national scene of wildlife art.
Born and raised in southern California, Leslie currently resides in a small mountain community surrounded by the Angeles National Forest. Primarily self taught, Leslie uses acrylics on clayboard for her wonderful wildlife paintings.
For Leslie half the fun of creating her artwork in in the gathering of reference material, working with animals, hiking and camping, to pleine aire painting.
After being in charge of caring and management of wildlife housed at a nature center for several years, Leslie now volunteers at a facility with non-releasable wildlife closer to her home.
Leslie works with birds of prey, snakes, including three species of rattlesnakes, bobcats, cougars, wolves and other animals. Field research, as well as the birds and animals she works with, provide reference material for her paintings.
She is a member in both the Society of Animal Artists and Woment Artists of the West, and Worldwide Nature Artists Group.

Chris Phelps is one of the founding members of the Silver Sage Gallery and though she grew up in the Gold Country of northern California she has called Dubois and the Upper Wind River Valley home now for twenty years.

During the late 80's Chris was in the leather business. Her specialties were custom moccasin making, leather clothing, bags, sheepskin coats and vests. Eventually this led her to the circle of reinactors known as buckskiners or montain men. She began attending the mountain man rendezvous' throughout the western and Rocky Mountain area. Pre 1840 shooting bags, muzzleloading accoutrements and old style beadwork were her area of expertise as a merchant on Traders Row. During the 1990's Chris beadwork was represented in Gallery of the West, Charles D' Lou Wildlife gallery, Martin Harris Gallery in Jackson, Wyoming, and the Grizzly Moon Gallery in Dubois, Wyoming.

Chris became interested in sculpting after being aroused by certain sculptors like Sandy Scott, Daro Flood, Bud Boller, T D Kelsey, Hollis Williford and Malcom Alexander. Having no fondness for drawing she began simply sculting in clay and to her surprise found she had a talent for this third dimensional art form.

In 2001 Chris became the Art Director for the Wind River Valley Artist's Guild in Dubois and her sculpting was put on hold for several years. As luck would have it one of her jobs as Art Director was schedualing classes and workshops and Silversmithing was one of the first classes offered. Her instructor was a longtime friend, John Story, who had been in the business for over 25 years and it was then that Chris began a new career in Silversmithing.

Chris admires all facets of Jewelry making and silversmithing, but the old style Southwest silver jewelry provides an endless inspiration to her creativity in this field. Their capacity for design, artistry and workmanship constantly push her to new levels of achievment and skill. As her mentor, John Story loves to remind her, "The only thing holding a person back is their imagination"! Chris response would be, "and a certain level of hand-eye coordination". Chris is most fortunate to have been gifted with both.

Today she spends most of her time with her jewelry design but also continues to work on her sculpting which she is so natural at.

Bud has a monument size bronze of MI AMOUR that we park out in front of the gallery on occassion. It sure brings the people in. It is a bronze to fall in love with.

Bud Boller is a sculptor of extraordinary talent. I am amazed at his sense of design and detail. He knows his anatomy. Bud grew up in Lander and has spent a lifetime in that area. I have mentioned in an earlier posting about Buds connection through his family with Butch Cassidy. Bud spent a lot of time cowboying in his formative years and with his relationship with the Shoshone Indians on the reservation[It is hard to take a trip with him to Lander as every ranch or place you pass on the reservation is a relative of Buds]

Bud did spend some time in California with relatives out there and for a time worked with Union Oil.

He managed the Hot Springs in Fort Washakie and ran a Sportings good store that also sold tack. It was during this time that some fellows from out of California saw some of Buds pencil drawings and asked to take some of them out to California to see what they could do with them. After some success at this it was mentioned that Bud should try some sculpting. He was a natural at it and it was in no time that his work was sought by many including Robert Redford and Paul Harvey the newscaster who became friends of Buds. Bud was mentioned numerous times on his newscasts. Charlton Heston commissioned Bud to do a bronze of himself as he was portrayed in THE MOUNTAIN MEN-costaring with Bryan Keith.

Buds work became popular with many galleries and collectors. He was commisioned to do the bronze that stands in the middle of the town square in Jackson, Wyoming and he is currently working on a monument that will be on the main corner of downtown Dubois across from the Silver Sage Gallery. It is everyones hope that this project will be completed this summer.

Bud lives on Red Creek east of Dubois on the reservation where he and his wife, Verna have a small ranch and some beautiful Apaloosa horses. It is a beautiful place and one can watch many elk, Bighorn Sheep, Mule Deer, Moose and other wildlife that frequent his place.

This bronze, Mi Amour is my favorite of all Buds pieces. Its attention to detail and the story it conveyes is priceless. The pistol in the holster even comes out and is sculpted of silver with either a walnut or pearl handle

My pardner, Tom Lucas is also very proficient at doing quick-draws and is working on a beautiful rendition of his portrayal of an Indian moccasin at the National 2-Shot Goose Hunt Show in Torrington, Wyoming this past December. His piece was highest in the auction upon completion of the painting session which was 45 minutes.

Another art endeavor I am heavily involved in is doing quick-draws at shows and art events. I began this as an entertainment gimick at some of the Dude ranches in our area where I was part of the evening entertainment teamed up with a fellow who was a fantastic Cowboy poet. He would do poetry while I would do a 30 minute painting. Jerrod Nesset was also quite an auctioneer and after we were both finished he would auction off my piece. I was surprised at what he would get at times. Jerrod passed away several years ago.
Here I am at the town square in Jackson, Wyoming finishing up my Goauche watercolor and visiting with the fellow here who ended up winning it at the auction held immediately after. We are given 45 minutes to complete a painting and another 15 for framing and presenting it at the auctioneers tent set up on the street next to the Town Square. It is an intense hour but a lot of fun andthere are a lot of people I get to meet. This is part of the highly acclaimed Jackson Hole Fall Arts Festival held every fall in Jackson. I will be there again this coming fall.
